The financial crisis likely has strengthened the need for people trained in computer programming, healthcare, and small business management. An associates degree can save you time and money, by transferring later to a regular 4-year degree program. Some careers that require an associates degree include becoming a dental assistant, occupational or physical therapy assistant, or licensed practical nurse (LPN). Many young people are natural business entrepreneurs, raised with new technology such as developing apps for the iPad and iPhone. Business majors may focus on starting their own small business, if the job market is tight. The greatest downside to an associates degree in the job market is that you will be competing with individuals holding bachelors degrees. Therefore, make sure you're comfortable in the niche you've chosen, and have developed strong job skills.

Although most jobs which pay six-figure salaries require a college degree, technical fields offer high salaries based more on ability than which school you graduated from. Students will impress future bosses more with an impressive portfolio than with an advanced degree, so practice your skills as a consultant for local companies. Candidates with prior industry experience are preferred by interviewers, so you resume must show a clear pattern of success over time, based on numeric results and personal achievements.
